Mother and I moved from New York City to Detroit Lakes MN when my father died at the age 36. She eventually remarried a local men's clothing salesman and I was no longer an only child. Tonight Christa and Adam of Lawrence KS got married in the Stearns County courthouse, location of the courtroom scene in the first Mighty Ducks movie. We joined them and Andrew and Val of Chicago and Val's brother Luke for a prenuptial brunch at Pete's Place, two blocks from the courthouse. Christa teaches design at Emporia College, Adam is a library science graduate student at the same college. Andrew is a graphic designer in downtown Chicago, Val just finishing her MFA in painting at a university in Chicago. And Luke is a bicycle messenger in Chicago. All but Adam took classes from me at St. Cloud State.

In the waning years of WW II, we were living in Rockville Center, Long Island, I was about 12 and dad was dying of a brain tumor. Mom said NYC was no place for a widow to bring up a child, so she packed us up and we took a train to her childhood home in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. That's where she met and married this widower. He was a clothing salesman and outdoorsman.
