Today I washed windows on the second floor. The wood has the original varnish, which may go back to 1923 when the house was built. So I turned off the stereo, began polishing glass, and listened to the old varnish tell its stories. This window is in our bedroom.

The most poignant stories came from that window that overlooks 17th Avenue South. In this room, now the guest bedroom, the man who built the house and probably applied the varnish died.
