Workshop on paddling and rescue on Lake George. On Wednesday I'll join about eight others for a five-day kayak tour of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. Storm clouds built up fast while we were on the lake tonight but the rain held off until we went inside for a discussion on Lake Superior weather, water temperature, and the black bears of Apostle Islands.

A series of 18 small rock piles appeared this week along the edge of the St. Cloud Public Library sidewalk. This afternoon I found the Rosary Man building a 19th pile. He said it was a metaphical action. During the last three years of the library's construction, Rosary Man walked every day, morning and night, around the site saying the rosary. He described that project as his argument with God.

LaVona chose this for me to read to her in bed each night. LaVona studied bookbinding in technical school and after nearly 60 years it's still in her blood. As Masterson describes each technical step in the repair and rebinding of an old book, LaVona sees it clearly in her mind.

In the waning years of WW II, we were living in Rockville Center, Long Island, I was about 12 and dad was dying of a brain tumor. Mom said NYC was no place for a widow to bring up a child, so she packed us up and we took a train to her childhood home in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. That's where she met and married this widower. He was a clothing salesman and outdoorsman.
