It began as a Sierra Club screening of a documentary on the history of traffic control in New York City but discussion quickly turned to the plight of walkers and bicyclists in St. Cloud where the automobile to be the focus of city planning. The mayor and city planner were there, insisting that the town has one of the best bus systems in Minnesota for small cities, that sidewalks are making a comeback, that offtrail bicycling facilities are among the best in the midwest. This morning, two angry drivers honked at me and another rolled down his window and cursed while I was crossing busy 9th avenue south on a pedestrian priority crosswalk.

In the waning years of WW II, we were living in Rockville Center, Long Island, I was about 12 and dad was dying of a brain tumor. Mom said NYC was no place for a widow to bring up a child, so she packed us up and we took a train to her childhood home in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. That's where she met and married this widower. He was a clothing salesman and outdoorsman.
