10:25 a.m. Sunday, awaked by um pahs from downstairs. Stumbled down to see LaVona shadow dancing to Fezz Fritsche and the Goosetown Band. Hadn't heard his band since the early 50's when I was in high school and played trumpet with Vic Schmidt and His White Jackets out of Taylor ND. Vic loaned me a recording of Fritsche's band and said this is how I want our trumpets to sound. For my money, the best polka band ever.

Tom Bakk came to town today in pursuit of the Democratic nomination for governor. Not much of an audience, an out-of-work carpenter and a retired teacher, but he spent an hour with us, talking about Minnesota issues, especially unemployment. He didn't buy my coffee nor did he ask me for a campaign donation. A big guy from the Iron Range where, he said, the economy trumps social issues (read abortion and gay marriage).

This is St. Cloud Technical College's first basketball team ever. Without a gymn, they practice at the Whitney Recreation Center. Without a budget, they stage bake sales and car washes.

The red/white stripes of the US flag on the sign of our neighborhood Halel market were recently painted over. At the right corner is the flag icon of Somalia.

Gordon (left) and Lowell Mortrude are brothers, both retired from the university faculty. Lowell and I taught together in Denmark in 1984. For the record, the hometown Huskies defeated the Mavericks 26-21.
